The term "diabetes" was coined by Araetus of Cappodocia in 81-133 AD, with the addition of "mellitus" later, recognizing the sweet taste of urine and blood in patients. Over time, scientists uncovered more about diabetes, leading to better ways to help those living with it.
One breakthrough was in 1857 when Claude Bernard found out about the liver's role in making sugar. This paved the way for more discoveries, including the link between the pancreas and diabetes by Mering and Minkowski in 1889. This eventually led to the discovery and use of insulin in treating diabetes by Banting and Best in 1921.
